What is Psychotherapy and counselling?
Psychotherapy is the treatment, by psychological means, of problems of an emotional nature in which a trained person deliberately establishes a professional relationship with the patient in the aim of removing, modifying or retarding existing symptoms; mediating disturbed patterns of behavior and promoting positive personality growth and development. It has some similarities with counselling which mainly aims to help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems that cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health.
